Tennova Healthcare - Newport Medical Center Commemorates Doctors’ Day with a Donation to Empower Cocke County

Newport, TN (March 30, 2023) – This year, to celebrate National Doctor’s Day, Tennova Healthcare - Newport Medical Center found a unique way to thank the providers who serve our community and hospitals. In lieu of gifts, Tennova Healthcare - Newport donated money to local charity, Empower Cocke County.
“The Board of Trustees and staff of Tennova Newport Medical Center want to say a big thank you to our medical providers who serve our community,” said Scott Williams, CEO. “We are fortunate to have a great team of dedicated and caring providers and want to acknowledge their contributions, sacrifices, skills and unwavering care to the thousands of lives we touch each year at Tennova Newport Medical Center”
Empower Cocke County received a donation of $1,500. Empower Cocke County is a local 501 c(3) nonprofit organization with a focus on positive life change with help to cease destructive behavior. This includes an addiction outpatient program, a program to give rides to those in need over 60 years of age, workforce development programs and more.
On Wednesday, March 29th, Candi Overholt , M.D., Internal Medicine Tennova Healthcare - Newport Larry Mathers, M.D., chief of staff Tennova Healthcare - Newport and Jeff Mathews, M.D., General Surgeon Tennova Healthcare - Newport presented a check to Annette Estrada, Executive Director of Empower Cocke County.
Doctors’ Day was first observed in Winder, Georgia. Started by Eudora Brown Almond, the wife of a prominent Georgian doctor, the day was meant to recognize and honor doctors for their service. She decided the best way to do that was to mail greeting cards to all the doctors she knew and to place flowers on the graves of deceased doctors. She used red carnations- a flower still used to this day for National Doctors’ Day celebrations. Each year, on March 30, we celebrate National Doctors’ Day to honor the professionals for their dedication and contributions to community and society. Tennova Healthcare - Newport Medical Center is sincerely grateful to doctors for all that they do.
